Whither Social Europe
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom is a signatory to the European Union Social Chapter, part of the 1997 Amsterdam Treaty. EU social policy includes social welfare protection, occupational health and employment rights, issues that have been discussed by politicians, Michael Portillo and Dennis MacShane, and labor union leader, John Monks. Portillo argues that there is a need to avoid rigid regulations, while MacShane favors a British model, rather than having to choose between a US or a European model. Monks notes that the US model involves inequality, the the government is concerned that the European model may appear unfriendly to business.

Spiralling costs hit liability ceiling
Article Abstract:
The insurance industry is very concerned that employers are not doing enough to reduce the rapidly increasing growth of injuries and illness related to the workplace. Much improved safety management is seen to be a critical factor in the future survival of many businesses. Accidents and illness associated with work lead to 30 million days being lost each year at a direct cost of two billion pounds sterling. Employers also have to pay another 600 million pounds sterling for replacements and sick pay. It is possible that insurance cover for some firms might be refused if they persist in their apathy.
