A change in the rules draws fire; litigators fight to stop mandatory disclosure
Article Abstract:
The US Judicial Conference's recommendation to amend Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 26 so as to require mandatory disclosure before discovery of relevant matters has engendered much controversy in the legal community. A coalition of legal and trade groups is trying to persuade Congress not to write this amendment into law. Critics fear that the proposed amendment would lead to additional expense and litigation since it gives no objective standards for adequate disclosure. This would be unfortunate since the amendment's aim was to cut down on discovery abuse.

Multimedia technologies aid litigators; presentation systems store huge numbers of documents for immediate retrieval and interactive highlighting in the courtroom
Article Abstract:
Modern litigators have found CD-ROM technology to be a boon to jury trial presentations with laserdiscs, visual presenters, and optically-scanned images becoming more commonplace in the courtroom. Cost-effective multimedia presentations, using images stored on computers or CD-ROMs, allow attorneys to store and retrieve enormous amounts of documents, photographs, and other data. Laserdisc, digitized, or videotape presentations of witness depositions are useful for impeachment purposes or reviewing key points.

Litigators to examine lack of funding, access
Article Abstract:
The A.B.A.'s Litigation Section plans to work on solutions for inadequate court access and court congestion and delay in 1993-94. Discrimination in justice administration, lawyers' job dissatisfaction and public disdain for lawyers are other issues the section hopes to address. Membership also feels that inadequate funding is provided for the administration of justice and the Special Committee on Funding the Justice System is addressing that issue.
