The five federalism cases on the 1999-2000 docket of the US Supreme Court are discussed. They involve such issues as a commerce clause challenge to the federal arson statute, a Violence Against Women Act challenge, and whether states are immune from qui tam suits.

Issues regarding the pending US Supreme Court rulings in the federalism area are discussed. The rulings in the 1999-2000 term involved the three active areas of the court's federalism jurisprudence: the 11th Amendment, the commerce clause and Section 5 of the 14th Amendment.

The key theme of the 1999-2000 US Supreme Court term, that of federalism, isd given. The court's earlier rulings provide the driving force for each term's key theme, as these lead to uncertainty in the lower courts and conflict the justices feel the need to resolve.Such federalism challenges as the Violence Against Women Act and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act will be heard this term.
