A little compliance can't hurt: ABA backs bills to direct federal agencies to follow court precedents
Article Abstract:
The Social Security Administration (SSA) would have to drop its policy of nonacquiescence under legislation supported by the ABA. SSA uses nonacquiescence to avoid compliance with the federal circuit court precedents used in courts having jurisdiction over particular SSA claims, such as denials of benefits to disabled persons. The legislation would force SSA compliance, although the agency contends conflicts between SSA regulations and precedents are rare occurrences not requiring a statutory solution.

ABA targets legislative priorities; reform of death penalty review, opposition of mandatory minimums top list
Article Abstract:
The ABA Board of Governors in February set five 'critical' and nine 'very important' priorities for its 1995 legislative/governmental agenda. The critical priorities include opposing mandatory minimum sentences, supporting legal aid to the poor, opposing limits to the federal judicial jurisdiction over remedies in constitutional cases, supporting reform of certain death-penalty review procedures, and resisting expansion of the 'good faith' exception to the exclusionary rule.
