A matter of full faith: legislators scramble to bar recognition of gay marriages
Article Abstract:
Laws at the state and federal levels banning recognition of same-sex marriages have sprung up in response to the fear that legitimation of such unions may soon take place in Hawaii. Legislators fear that gay couples will travel to Hawaii to get married and then demand married couples' benefits in their home states. The federal version is called the Defense of Marriage Act and bars federal marriage benefits usually awarded to couples. Evan Wolfson, the director of the Marriage Project of the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, feels the state bills violate the constitution.

DOJ adopts ADR program: plan expected to speed up, reduce cost of civil cases
Article Abstract:
The Justice Dept has begun an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) program and increased to $1 million the amount for which cases can be settled which should reduce the time and cost of the 170,000 civil suits handled annually. State and local government agencies have been using ADR for some time while other federal departments have also had ADR programs. The federal judiciary first began using some form of ADR in 1978. ADR may be one way to resolve problems with the speed and cost of suits while the Justice Dept's decision further indicates that ADR is becoming commonplace.

Judge gets tough in fungicide trials
Article Abstract:
Litigation over EI DuPont de Nemours' fungicide Benlate remains tumultuous and shows no clear winner though only 200 or so of the initial 650 cases are still pending. DuPont has lost nine and won five of the cases, which claim Benlate sold in the late 1980s and early 1990s was contaminated with a herbicide that damaged crops. DuPont settled such cases until late 1992. A judge recently overturned two jury decisions in Miami, requiring retrials; one had favored DuPont, the other, the plaintiff.
