A proposed method for analyzing competition among differentiated products
Article Abstract:
Analyzing market power in a market with different products must take into account the fact that not all products face the same degree of competition since their substitutability varies. Competition and market power can be more effectively analyzed by including all relevant products and evaluating each one's competitive significance by its substitutability with the product in question. Economists measure substitutability by the cross-price elasticity of products, which is the rate where demand for one product goes up when another product is priced higher.

The antitrust significance of a patent's exclusionary power
Article Abstract:
A patent gives its owner the right to exclude. A number of problems, such a narrow claims and non-infringing options, can keep patent owners from exercising their rights of exclusion. A problem with cases covering issues in both antitrust and patent law is not understanding that a patent grants only the right to exclude and cannot result in market power, unless the patent owner also makes and markets goods covered by the patent. Presuming that patents create market power for the patent owner constitutes unfair 'double counting.'

Market power in antitrust merger analysis: refining the collusion hypothesis
Article Abstract:
The focal point of antitrust enforcement is the collusion hypothesis. This hypothesis is normally discussed in two parts: incomplete coordination and the significance of big buyers. Coordination between companies if often incomplete, but companies hope to achieve some consensus by what coordination there is. Companies also argue that mergers do not adversely affect competition because buyers are big enough to deal with the changes, and that big buyers facilitate coordination because deviations are more noticeable.
