Agency automation: barriers and opportunities
Article Abstract:
Many insurance agents have bought their own client management database systems which increases the problems for insurance agencies planning to automate because the systems must either be integrated or replaced, requiring extra training. The automation trend is focused on local area networks, allowing agents to maintain their individual computers while also linking into the overall company database. In addition, agents can have routine account work completed by assistants, and managers can easily keep track of all agents.

Computer telephone integration
Article Abstract:
Computer telephone integration (CTI) combines many currently available technologies, such as contact management software, fax and electronic mail, to help insurance agents better serve their clients. Callers can be routed to their contact who answers the phone with all the necessary client information and the ability to fax further information during the call. The system has a short learning curve because most of the technologies are already in use while CTI can significantly enhance productivity.

Wireless computing
Article Abstract:
The trend toward telecommuting can significantly benefit insurance agents by making the resources of the office available when presenting to a client through a portable computer. However, insurance offices should carefully consider what type of system they wish to automate with because the standards are still being developed. Currently available options include a two-way packet radio, circuit-switched cellular mode and Cellular Digital Packet Data mode.
