Anti-lawyer attitude up; but NLJ/West poll also shows more people are using attorneys
Article Abstract:
A National Law Journal/West Publishing Co poll of public attitudes towards the legal profession shows cynicism about lawyers to be on the rise. The poll also reveals racial and gender divides, with blacks less critical of lawyers than whites and women less critical than men. Respondents in general felt that an attorney they needed to hire would be competent but also felt they would be overcharged. In one of the most telltale indicia, people's answers about which lawyers they most admired included a fictional lawyer, Perry Mason, and two deceased ones, Thurgood Marshall and Abraham Lincoln.
