Bar associations face declining member rolls; suburban and specialized bar groups catering to the young pick up slack; tough times
Article Abstract:
General-purpose bar assns at the national, state, and big-city levels report falling membership numbers, while special-interest and suburban ones seem to be rising. The trend may be due to the younger average age of lawyers now, their greater diversity and suspicion of established groups, or their work locations. Also, many firms have cut back on paying for their attorneys' professional memberships. Some observers think electronic communications and new technologies will be the associations' future battleground for members.

Who does the experts' taxes?
Article Abstract:
Many tax attorneys find it easier, cheaper and wiser to have someone else prepare their tax returns. Government tax lawyers have the headache of filing financial interest disclosure statements with the appropriate agency in addition to their tax returns. Both ask for much the same information and must be consistent with each other for obvious reasons. Few tax attorneys have seen successful prosecutions for tax fraud and evasion filed against them.
