Black D.C. attorneys arrive; Whitewater puts African-American lawyers in spotlight as O.J. did before
Article Abstract:
The success of African American attorneys during the 1995 trial and acquittal of O.J. Simpson marks for many in the profession the emergence of the black District of Columbia bar. Before the arrival of Johnnie Cochran Black attorneys say clients often chose white lawyers rather than minority ones. Ten years ago most blacks became government attorneys after law school to avoid racism. Nathaniel H. Speights III is the highest profile black attorney involved in former White House intern Monica Lewinsky'd defense and there are a long list of others.

Buying into the buyout; law firms adopt corporate strategy to cut costs while fostering good will
Article Abstract:
Incentive plans to persuade less productive older attorneys to retire early and make room for younger ones to move up are appearing at more law firms. Gibson Dunn and Crutcher started this movement. The firm saw the lashback against others which used layoffs and salary cuts to control costs and devised its early retirement plan to make finer alternations to firm demographics. Gibson Dunn has long been known for its progressive culture. Such plans have the added advantage of preserving the good will of law firm alumnae.
