Business reengineering has become an essential tool in cost management for many corporations, allowing them to reduce personnel and paperwork while maximizing automation techniques. The concept is based on the changing market, products and even consumers who need to addressed in ways that reflect those changes. Some companies that have successfully implemented business reengineering include Ford Motor Co, which reduced its accounts payable department from 500 to 100 people, and USAA, which reduced its dramatically reduced its paperwork.

Consumers and potential clients turn increasingly to financial software and the Internet for information and planning tools, so financial services professionals should consider knowing popular packages or even developing expertise and advising clients regarding the topic. Some have found it best to lend clients a notebook computer pre-loaded with relevant software packages. Affordable modern peripherals include quad-speed CD-ROM drives, 24-bit color scanners, 16-bit sound cards, and 28.8 Kbps fax-modem cards.

Article Abstract:
Contact management software designed specifically for sales is becoming more available. The Sep 1991 issue of PC/Computing included a survey and evaluation of 17 contact management software packages. The most common features were auto-dialer, monthly calendar, to-do list generator, own word processor, mail merge and predefined reports. Packages worth investigating include Action Plus 4.5, Sales Ally 3.1, Bix-Base Gold 2.1 and Maximizer 2.1.
