Cert denial of scholarship case leaves some officials wondering
Article Abstract:
Law schools have been left to interpret whether race-targeted scholarship programs are still legal after the US Supreme Court denied certiorari of Podberesky v. Kirwan, a Fourth Circuit case prohibiting race-targeted funds. The California Regents v. Bakke ruling was the only previous one on the issue and the US Supreme Court held that race could be one of the admission criteria as long as it was not the sole one. The University of Maryland School of Law is continuing its affirmative action program but broadening the scope to include non-black and non-minority applicants.

Low grades from the ABA spur unique school to traditional path
Article Abstract:
The City University of New York Law School at Queens College is taking steps to address concerns raised by the American Bar Association regarding its grading system, its admissions policy and its bar exam pass rate, but the school remains committed to providing an alternative to other law schools. The school will switch to an honors/satisfactory/pass/fail system in 1997 from its present pass/fail system. The school remains committed to admitting a limited number of students with low LSAT scores, and it notes that student performance on the bar exam has been improving.

Real law in a virtual classroom: San Diego and Cleveland join up
Article Abstract:
California Western School of Law Professor Andrea L. Johnson is offering the first known multi-school class taught using videoconferencing, electronic casebooks, and the Internet. Johnson will also teach the class, an advanced telecommunications course, in a traditional format to a control group of students. She hopes the class will simultaneously expose the students to a major future medium and test whether distance learning can work yet.
