Clinton economics can work if...
Article Abstract:
Bill Clinton's economic plan can promote economic growth through deficit reduction, infrastructure financing and retraining programs as long as Congress does not add additional spending or taxes. Controlling health care costs is a necessary aspect of the plan if deficit reduction is to be achieved without increasing inflation. However, some plan aspects will work against Clinton's goals such as higher taxes on the wealthy because they will reduce savings and therefore the amount of capital for investment. Similarly, increased foreign corporation taxes will reduce foreign investment.

Should we worry about Asia and deflation and cheer federal budget surpluses?
Article Abstract:
Early 1998 brought gloomy financial forecasts from commentators concerned about economic problems in Asian markets. International lending practices have contributed to the perception of imminent danger to the US economy. The concern is overstated because elimination of all Asian markets would decrease the US economy by only 3.6 percent. The US government budget projected surplus is among other reasons not to overstate the concern.

Where's the recovery?
Article Abstract:
Economic growth is likely to be sluggish for the first half of 1992. Many recessionary factors continue to be operative, including excess real estate inventory, spending restraint caused by overleveraging in the 1980s and a 'credit crunch.' Inventory rebuilding is the only source of growth. Hourly wage increases are projected to be less than last year, and interest rates will remain low. Tax cuts could help stimulate the economy.
