Confronting likelihood of massive changes
Article Abstract:
The American Bar Assn's Section of Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law faces perhaps the most sweeping changes of any section in the coming year. In response to new federal and state legislation and court actions, it has adopted its first five-year strategic plan and launched a series of dialogues. The first, in June 1995, looked at voluntary environmental compliance incentives. Upcoming ones will examine sustainable development, the EPA's market-based pollution efforts, and managed land development.

Advising lawyers of cross-border developments
Article Abstract:
The American Bar Assn's Section of International Law and Practice deals with many topics of interest to lawyers specializing in other areas. Current focuses include exploring mechanisms for an international trademark system, encouraging other countries to adopt an equivalent to the US's Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, developing joint antitrust investigations between US and overseas bodies to avoid duplication of effort and contradictory conditions, and helping developing nations to establish a legal framework.

Initiating new rules for ethical business conduct
Article Abstract:
The American Bar Assn's Business Law Section has actively reviewed its programs over the past year, and two task forces have nearly completed their efforts. One on lawyer business ethics is offering a statement of principles covering billings, disbursements, and marketing. Another, on conflicts of interest, has a draft memorandum for review at the annual meeting. The section as a whole is trying to increase participation by minorities and women, and has launched short brown-bag educational lunch programs.
