Courting trouble: emergence of common-law courts raises concerns among critics
Article Abstract:
Self-proclaimed common-law courts have sprung up in a dozen states or more, with what critics call a detrimental effect on the legitimate court system. The movement's activists call state and federal courts 'equity courts,' and acknowledge their authority only over contract, admiralty, and interstate commerce matters. Common-law courts have indicted and threatened public officials, issued phony judgments and liens, and clogged state and federal courts with paperwork. They also undermine the authority of existing courts.

Tri-state training; supreme courts in Maine, N.H. and Vt. mull plan requiring joint skills classes for would-be lawyers
Article Abstract:
A task force is asking the supreme courts of New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine to consider the establishment of a skills course that may permit bar applicants to be licensed in all 3 states. The states established the task force of attorneys, judges, and laypeople to consider concerns raised by a 1992 ABA task force report on law schools and the profession. The report concluded that law school graduates do not show sufficient development in the skills necessary to practice law.
