Courts now out of job as jailers; new law to end prison oversight applauded by state attorneys general
Article Abstract:
The Prison Litigation Reform Act was part of the budget reconciliation bill signed in spr 1996 and law-and-order advocates tout its return of prison control to the states. The law allows termination of prison consent decrees if it is shown that they were not issued to correct constitutional violations and of prison-related court orders more than 2 yrs old if there is evidence that they are no longer needed to remedy violations of federal rights. The law's detractors fear the act is the death knell of the consent decree to settle prisoner lawsuits.

All the news fit to tape: hidden-camera cases test scope of media protections
Article Abstract:
Lawsuits on undercover news reporters using hidden cameras provide a new challenge to the media's First Amendment protections. For example, ABC News lost a tort case in Food Lion v. ABC Inc., which is on appeal. ABC News successfully reversed another such conviction with its appeal of Sanders v. ABC Inc. Plaintiffs in such cases can allege invasion of privacy, fraud, trespass, misrepresentation or breach of loyalty.
