Critical issue: institutional reform and the IGC
Article Abstract:
The European Union's (EU) intergovernmental conference was convened in 1996 to discuss the creation of a flexible union of up to 26 members, including 10 ex-communist nations. The year-long review is reaching its conclusion and its findings will have relevance for the business community. Institutional reform is of strong interest to businesses, particularly the move to simplify often unworkable and incomprehensible EU legislation. The UK's new Labour government is likely to move the nation into the mainstream of Europe and cooperate with closer European integration.

Consumers and the euro
Article Abstract:
It is important to consider how the introduction of the euro, the single European currency, will affect ordinary consumers. The euro will bring particular benefits to consumers who like to seek out bargains when shopping. The role of these consumers will determine whether the introduction of the euro has relatively little impact, or reduces prices quickly or gradually. It is likely that the bargain hunter will harmonize the price of necessities downwards, but this process may take longer than is generally anticipated.

Business choices for EMU
Article Abstract:
The single European currency looks set to become a certainty by the end of the 1990s with the fixing of exchange rates due on 1 January, 1999. France, Germany, Austria and Finland appear ready to meet Maastricht criteria, with Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Sweden and Denmark making preparations to join at a later date. The UK could meet criteria, but is unwilling to make the commitment, though the business community is keen.
