Cross-national patterns in crime rates
Article Abstract:
A summary is provided on some of the cross-national patterns in recorded crime rates and a comparison of the recorded crime rates with survey based estimates. Some of the nations selected for the crime-victimization survey were England and Wales, Scotland, Australia, Canada, and US. Evidence relevant to the deterrent effects of punishment, comparing trends in crime rates to trends in the relative frequency of custodial sentences is presented.

Crime and punishment in Australia, 1980-2000
Article Abstract:
Australia experienced sustained increases in the incidence of robbery, serious assault and rape, declines in motor vehicle theft and stability in homicide and burglary during 1980 and 2000. Persons convicted of homicide, serious assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft received longer sentences.
