Defending American democracy: lawyers play a key role in ensuring that the Constitution remains vibrant
Article Abstract:
Over the next year the American Bar Assn must confront widespread attacks on the profession, the Constitution, and the justice system that together protect the rights of all citizens. Lawyers must remind those around them of the important role they play in making communities work. Congress faces many proposed constitutional amendments, distractiong its attention and energies from critical issues, and special interests try to persuade the public that lawyers are the root cause of all America's problems. Fortunately, problem- solving and effective communications are hallmarks of the profession.

Let's not take it anymore: speaking out against spurious attacks on the legal system is vital
Article Abstract:
The ABA has several responses to those who criticize lawyers and the legal system, including steps individual lawyers can and should take. People who have honestly encountered problems with a lawyer or a part of the legal system deserve a fair hearing, and an effort to right that problem. Those who scapegoat lawyers must be refuted, through calls to talk shows, letters to the editor, and other means. The ABA offers many educational materials and programs to inform citizens about their legal system.

Heroes in the truest sense; lawyers who act with courage and dignity are role models for us all
Article Abstract:
Some public interest lawyers and ones who have left the law for government service are examples to society. Dennis Archer is a lawyer who is mayor of Detroit. Alex Forger practices law in one of the country's major law firms but devotes much free time to representing the poor. Nan Nolan defends criminals and has helped save Rolando Cruz, a convicted murderer, from the death penalty. Billy Payne gave up his legal practice to head the Atlanta Olympic Committee.
