Discrimination probe planned; House committee to investigate environmental racism
Article Abstract:
John Conyers, chairman of the House Government Operations Subcommittee, plans to hold hearings on allegations of environmental racism leveled against the EPA in a National Law Journal survey on the subject. The National Law Journal's findings included 46% higher penalties on polluters in white communities than in minority communities and a 20% longer wait to be listed as a Superfund site in minority communities than in white communities. Bills targeting environmental racism are thought to have a better chance of passage when Congress reconvenes in Jan 1993.

Residents want 'justice,' the EPA offers 'equity.' (Unequal Protection: The Racial Divide in Environmental Law)
Article Abstract:
Grassroots leaders in the environmental justice movement are frustrated that the EPA is downplaying their protests with the bureaucratic solution of an EPA Office of Environmental Equity. Some $1 million to fund the office will be taken from other areas of the EPA budget. The office will be able to award grants for urban cleanup and research. Environmental justice movement leaders praise EPA head William K. Riley for his efforts, but charge the Bush administration and the agency in general with a lack of interest in change.
