Effective paralegal use cuts costs
Article Abstract:
Delegating work to paralegals makes sound financial sense during a recession, when more and more clients are urging law firms to control costs. Savings can also be achieved by making better use of support staff such as document clerks and legal secretaries. Temporary paralegals cost less than a firm's full-time legal assistant staff and can be used for less challenging tasks. Law firms need to recognize their paralegals by giving them promotional opportunities and providing for their professional development.

How firms successfully hire staffers; sophisticated assessment methods now are used by firms to fill the positions of junior associate, paralegal and secretary
Article Abstract:
A complex multiple-hurdle approach to law firm hiring costs more money and takes more time to implement than a standardized approach but usually provides far superior results. Such sophisticated analysis methods work best for hiring secretaries, paralegals, and junior associates, with increasing levels of complexity and investment. Many pressures are acting on law firms to make them cut dead weight and do more with fewer but better people. A good hiring system costs less than a single bad, preventable hire.

So close to Nirvana at Columbus' Vorys Sater; associate attrition is low, but, given the firm's history, partners try to stamp it out
Article Abstract:
No partner has left Columbus, Ohio's Vorys, Sater, Seymour & Pease since the founding of the firm in 1909, but the law firm has some concern about the associate attrition rate of about 10% firmwide. This rate may be quite low when compared to other firms, and the firm cites as causes mainly a high hourly billing requirement and a policy of making no part-time partners, seen as a stumbling block by women who want flexible schedules. Strategies for associate retention are listed.
