Establishing the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea establishing the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), a 21-member elected body, and the Sea-Bed Disputes Chamber. The ITLOS dispute settlement procedures have been the source of controversy. As of Apr 1995, only five countries had chosen ITLOS as their preferred dispute resolution procedure, with most nations instead opting for arbitration or International Court proceedings.
