European 'passport' liberalizes some investments; transferable securities directive makes investing among nations a bit easier
Article Abstract:
Amendments approved in 2000 to the European Union's Undertakings for Collective Investments in Transferable Securities Directive (UCITS) are discussed. The UCITS Directive allows pooled investment vehicles from one EU member state to be marketed in other member states and tries to coordinate the laws of member states regarding various investment tools.

The seven safe harbor privacy principles negotiated by the United States with the European Union to make sure that data flowing between the areas complies with the EU Directive on Data Protection are discussed. Critics consider the EU Directive to be a protectionist scheme restricting competition by American companies in the EU marketplace.

The privacy principles issued by the US Dept of Commerce to reconcile the vastly different privacy approaches of the US and the European Union are discussed., as the US has no comprehensive data protection law and it was unclear whether US companies could keep receiving personal information from the EU once the directive took effect.
