Desktop faxing comes of age
Article Abstract:
Symantec's $119.95 WinFax Pro 9.0 fax software offers an extensive list of features, yet remains easy to use. The application runs on Windows 95, 98 and NT 4.0. Installation is automatic. The software generates fax logs, which can be archived and printed, and the transmission of faxes can be scheduled during periods when the cheapest long-distance rates are available. WinFax can share modems between several PCsover TCP/IP networks, although Microsoft Network's NetBEUI protocol will not allow modem sharing. Optical character recognition (OCR) converts faxes to text so they can be modified.

PDF for the people
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems' $249 Acrobat 4.0 portable document software is designed to convert files to portable document format (.pdf) and to change existing .pdf files. Because the PDF format is essentially platform-independent, many courts encourage all documents to be electronically filed in PDF format. Acrobat 4.0, much easier to use than Acrobat 3.0, includes PDF Writer for converting text-only documents, as well as Distiller for converting graphics or text/graphic combinations. Because Acrobat 4.0 supports multiple-page scanning, paper-based documents are easily scanned and converted into .pdf files. Acrobat 4.0's much improved optical character recognition (OCR) interface ensures far greater accuracy in identifying and correcting words.
