Feds snare lawyers in Cali Cartel net; the defense bar sees, in raids, taps and novel theories, an unprecedented attack
Article Abstract:
Federal prosecutors on June 5, 1995, indicted six attorneys in Miami on charges involving their work aiding and advising leaders of the Cali cocaine cartel. Defense lawyers in the community expressed outrage, saying government methods of investigation were questionable and that the government was trying to blame the lawyers for their clients' actions. They also noted that successful legal work for drug kingpins would inevitably aid the latter in their actions. One of the lawyers, Michael Abbell, is a former top Justice Department official.

Deal cited in Noriega trial: letters show U.S. bargained with drug cartel for key witness, lawyers claim
Article Abstract:
Manuel Noriega's lawyers in Miami claim federal prosecutors suppressed material in Noriega's trial, including letters describing a deal prosecutors cut with the Cali cocaine cartel to induce a key witness to testify. Sole practitioners Frank A. Rubino and Jon A. May say Ricardo Bilonick testified only after the government agreed to reduce the sentence for imprisoned smuggler Luis 'Lucho' Santacruz Echeverri, a brother of a Cali leader. May and Rubino hope to get Santacruz's file unsealed.

Feds scramble to hide witnesses; named in lawyers' ad
Article Abstract:
The murder of an informant whose name appeared in an advertisement in The Champion, monthly publication of the National Assn of Criminal Defense Lawyers, has unnerved federal law enforcement personnel enough for them to relocate other witnesses in the Falcon drug smuggling case to different prisons. Since 1989, more than five people with a connection to the Falcon case have been murdered
