Fee case shows fast-lane billing
Article Abstract:
The nuances and ambiguities of legal fees have come to light in the case in which attorney Howard Weitzman, formerly a partner in the now defunct Wyman, Bautzer, Kuchel and Silbert, has sued his ex-client John De Lorean over unpaid charges. In question are Weitzman's practice of 'ballparking' time spent on a case instead of keeping charts and the firm's practice of waiting up to a year before sending bills to clients. The case will hinge on whether De Lorean's transfer of the deed to his house to Weitzman was compensation for the legal services rendered.

Don't call them local; is office politics making some 'national' firms erase their hometowns?
Article Abstract:
Some major law firms are changing the way they are described and have abolished the idea of headquarters and branch offices. Some observers feel that waning partner loyalty is behind this trend and that partners at places designated branch offices are likely to be less loyal. Bad treatment of attorneys in places formerly designated branch offices will not automatically disappear with different designations but changes in language can lead to changes in behavior.

L.A. firms top N.Y.'s in coastal warfare; Cal. firms do well in Big Apple, but New Yorkers fade in L.A
Article Abstract:
The respective economic cycles of the two US coasts could play a part in the poor record of New York law firm branches in Los Angeles and the good one of Los Angeles law firm branches in Manhattan, as could the less centralized government of Los Angeles firms, so that moving a branch is less likely to be a professional death knell. Los Angeles also never became the West Coast Wall Street that some predicted.
