Female lawyers see bias in their arrests: cursing and culottes were unacceptable to authorities in Texas, Florida
Article Abstract:
The ABA has received many complaints about alleged disparate treatment of male and female lawyers, with women claiming they must keep a higher standard. One example is Houston, TX criminal defense attorney Mary Conn, who was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for swearing after a courthouse constable asked her to remove jewelry so she would not set off the metal detector. The ABA Commission on Women in the Profession says stories like this are common.

Imposter lawyers fool many: failure to check credentials of new hires could leave law firms liable
Article Abstract:
Few courts or law firms ever confirm that those they hire or deal with as lawyers have actually earned that status. Steven M. Welchons practiced as a deputy public defender in Wampsville, NY, for two years before being accidentally uncovered, and many more like him may never be caught. Those who are usually have used their claimed law degree to steal money from clients. Some law firms report they have recently begun to ask to see new associates' licenses.

Lawyers who skip law school; seven states allow read-law programs despite ABA's opposition
Article Abstract:
Seven states have 'reading law' programs allowing people pursuing an independent study of the law under a lawyer's tutelage to gain legal licenses. Some require up to one year in law school and most up to four years of study under a member of the bar. Most also have a pre-set curriculum and tests for such students. Lawyer-graduates of such programs can practice only in their own states.
