It's been a good year for corporate legal work; numbers are rising again in-house, and outside counsel has been very busy as well
Article Abstract:
The expansion of in-house corporate attorneys indicated by the 11th annual National Law Journal survey of that specialty indicates that downsizing may have ended at most corporate law departments of the country's largest 250 industrial and service companies. The number of in-house attorneys increased for the third year in a row at more than 40% of these companies. This increase was the same in 1997 and nearly 50% in 1996. A long directory of in-house attorneys at each company is given.

Corporate counsel post can lead to power seat
Article Abstract:
Lawyers are finding that a corporate counsel position can involve the highest authority for a company, and job stability is also developing. In The National Law Journal's annual survey of 250 corporations, about one fourth had no change while about half had hired more lawyers. While 64 corporations showed a decline in counsel staff, much of this was due to divestments, not really indicating job losses.
