Firms scramble in Silicon Valley; high-tech rush, land-use bars squeeze newcomers
Article Abstract:
Law firms have found prime office space rare and commensurately expensive in Menlo Park and Palo Alto, CA, the heart of Silicon Valley and the firms driving much of the US economy. A rash of initial public offerings and intellectual-property lawsuits have drawn firms from across the country, sending rents plus operating expenses $4 per square foot above those for prime Manhattan real estate. Still, established offices say their revenue more than makes up for the cost. No end to the land crunch is now foreseen.

Out-of-town corporate firms handling IP litigation
Article Abstract:
The typical intellectual property case includes many general allegations from legal areas a diverse as patent infringement, copyright, securities fraud and even antitrust claims, and large general practice firms rather than Silicon Valley specialists can be best equipped to handle them. The Intel Corps selection of Henry M. Gutman of New York-based Simpson Thacher and Bartlett to handle its patent-infringement cases typifies the computer industry's recognition of this fact.

Silicon Valley lawyers defect; form venture boutique
Article Abstract:
Craig W. Johnson and several other attorneys from the Silicon Valley firm Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati are defecting to form the Venture Law Group. This group's specialty will be the representation of start-up companies. Johnson states that he left not because of financial concerns but because of the desire to be more of an entrepreneur. Some observers question the wisdom of this move in view of the trend towards large, one-stop shopping firms.
