Fla. jurors hear tales of sex, religion, death
Article Abstract:
Yahweh sect leader Hulon Mitchell Jr. and 15 followers are on trial in Fort Lauderdale, FL, for murder and racketeering. The prosecution is trying to prove that Mitchell and cohorts used murder, beatings and sexual abuse to maintain control of the group. The defendants' habit of wearing white robes and turbans in court and the often lurid testimony have attracted considerable attention. Mitchell's defense attorney is former US District Judge Alcee L. Hastings, who was removed from the bench for bribery in 1989.

States enact 'stalking' laws; California takes lead
Article Abstract:
Legislators in 28 states are deliberating on anti-stalking laws and in some states such measures have already become law. Victims' rights groups are happy but some criminal defense lawyers fear there could be unjustified prosecutions. They question the constitutionality of arresting someone with only oral evidence from the alleged victim. Florida has one of the strictest anti-stalking laws.

Legal techs face regulation; rules mulled nationwide
Article Abstract:
There is a move afoot in around 12 states to require licensing of legal technicians, or self-employed paralegals. Some paralegals oppose the idea, fearing more regulation would not enhance the availability of legal services to low and middle-income individuals. There is also some feeling that unemployed attorneys should be the ones providing legal services to those of lesser means.
