Focus of abortion war shifts to the states; bills aimed at funding, clinic access and new restrictions are pending
Article Abstract:
Abortion rights and right-to-life activists have shifted to state battlegrounds to push their respective agendas. The first four months of 1993 have seen the introduction of some 200 abortion bills in state legislatures. Bills propounded by the pro-life activists seek waiting periods, counseling and parental involvement in decisions about minors' abortions. Abortion rights activists' bills seek to ensure clinic access. South Dakota and Utah have passed bills requiring waiting periods, and the South Dakota bill also requires parental involvement.

Lawyers find job a cause, not a specialty
Article Abstract:
Pro- and anti-abortion rights lawyers see their jobs as a cause, not just a legal specialty. This legal specialty has developed since the Roe v Wade decision of 1973. Lawyers on both sides of the abortion debate help local legislators involved in the issue. The most important lawyers concentrate on impact litigation and appear frequently before the Supreme Court. Biographical sketches of prominent pro- and anti-abortion attorneys are given.

The war to heat up; anti-abortion activists are going to reignite the battles in the states
Article Abstract:
The impact of the Supreme Court's 1992 decision in Planned Parenthood v Casey will be felt in the state legislatures in early 1993 as anti-abortion activists lobby for state laws banning abortion. Pro-abortion rights activists are promising to block abortion regulation bills and lobbying for passage of the Freedom of Choice Act, which would bring back the strict scrutiny standard for state abortion laws.
