'Free exercise' revisited
Article Abstract:
Anti-cult groups that try to demonize nascent religious sects bear much of the blame for the disastrous assault on the Branch Davidians in Waco, TX. The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms targeted David Koresh's group because, influenced by the Cult Awareness Network, the American Family Foundation, and others, they failed to consider the constitutional protections accorded all religions, not just mainstream ones. That assault was no more justifiable than one on any more popular religion.
