Frugal firms cut recruiting costs: interviewess, lavishly wooed in the '80s, are now often stuck with travel tab
Article Abstract:
Law firms, faced with a soft economy and declining profits, are reluctant to pay the travel expenses of out-of-town interviewees. Other ways of cutting expenses include looking locally; conducting initial interviews by phone; paying bonuses to associates for finding desired candidates and requiring out-of-town interviewees to have interviews at branch offices of the law firm. Another reason for increased law firm frugality is the experience that out-of-town lateral hires with no ties to the new town do not stay very long.

Road warriors

Frequent travellers offer a bevy of tips for reducing the stress of travel and making the most of an often difficult experience. The best way to avoid stress is to travel with one's personal lifestyle in mind, making time for workouts or for frequent contact with loved ones at home. Suggestions cover selecting hotels, booking trips, and reacclimating to home life and the regular office. Light packing is a useful skill, reducing bags lost and speeding customs inspections, while melatonin can aid in rescheduling sleep.

Of counsel: it's not just for retiring, anymore
Article Abstract:
The of-counsel designation has changed over the past two decades from a way to describe semi-retired former partners to one for lawyers who cannot or do not want to seek partnership status. Most lawyers who are of counsel to law firms are consciously avoiding the pressures of rainmaking. Some found themselves with years of experience but no billings, while others have a second job or business, and still others want more time for family or other pursuits. It also helps postpone a committment for a hiring law firm.
