Some sole practitioners who have shifted to working at home described some of the disadvantages of the home-based business. The list includes less respect from clients, increased solitude, the expense of purchasing a health insurance policy, especially for those used to employer-provided benefits, and the time spent on administrative tasks.

Legal specialties available to US sole practitioners working abroad are discussed. A lawyer fluent in Chinese, one working in Okinawa doing on work only civilian lawyers can do for service members and one who moved from New York City to Israel all tell their stories.

Web sites can provide effective advertising for sole practitioners and small firm lawyers, and the average computer user can design such Web sites with new word processing software on the market that effortlessly turns documents into Web pages. The site can be launched for as little as the cost of an Internet connection. The site's content should reflect its function, and should have regular updates.
