Guarding liberties in new political era: the outgoing president asks lawyers to challenge 'reforms' that curb core rights
Article Abstract:
The legal profession and the American Bar Assn must both encourage their members to lead the country and take firm, prominent stances on several critical issues over the next few years. These include challenges to the Constitution and the causes and results of rising hostility and even hatred to foreigners. Furthermore, the profession's balance has shifted from major mid-city firms to small and solo practices, necessitating new ways to ensure lawyers have the tools and training appropriate to their new environment.

Guarding inherent and inalienable civil liberties
Article Abstract:
The American Bar Assn's Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities faces a great challenge in the form of a national shift threatening equal rights and promoting hatred. The section, established 30 years ago as one of several civil rights milestones of 1965, has recently testified in the Senate on behalf of human rights treaties and filed a brief with the Supreme Court backing opponents of the Colorado effort to bar legal protections for gay men and lesbians.

The new president urges attorneys to resist an 'incredible' assault on the law
Article Abstract:
The American Bar Assn must help its members to confront both widespread attacks on lawyers and efforts to narrow or revise the US Constitution. It must help lawyers communicate more clearly, and explain to clients the importance of civility in the legal process. Lawyers must rededicate themselves to the Constitution, and to enhancing their profession's stature through their own impeachable integrity. Finally, technology must serve the profession.
