HUD fallout: fury, contempt in courtroom
Article Abstract:
US v Briscoe alleges that former top Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) aide Lance H. Wilson, developer Leonard E. Briscoe and attorney M. David Steier engaged in a bribery conspiracy to obtain HUD grants worth $46 million. Wilson's illegal acts allegedly occurred after he left HUD in 1984, when he facilitated HUD grants to Briscoe with letters saying his brokerage firm would help finance Briscoe projects. Briscoe then allegedly bribed DuBois L. Gilliam, the HUD official in charge of grants to poor urban areas.

Article Abstract:
Heirs to former NY Gov W Averell Harriman filed three actions on Nov 2 relating to their ongoing litigation against his widow, Pamela C Harriman, US ambassador to France. They charge her with fraud and are appealing an unfavorable ruling by US District Judge John Martin, though they are dropping a racketeering suit. The heirs hope to make more headway in NY's Surrogate Court than they did in the federal venue regarding the $30 million in trust assets that they say Ambassador Harriman and others dissipated.
