Herbal garden of good and evil: the ongoing struggles of dietary supplement regulation
Article Abstract:
Regulation of dietary supplements including herbals such as St. John's Wort changed in 1996 when Congress enacted the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). The DSHEA stripped the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) of regulatory power over supplements in favor of industry self-regulation. Review of DSHEA's provisions and comparison with the cosmetics industry suggest that the dietary supplements industry should work with the FDA and the Office of Dietary Supplements to protect consumers.
