House of Delegates; close vote rescinds provision against ancillary business
Article Abstract:
The ABA House of Delegates has rescinded an ethical provision, Rule 5.7 of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, limiting law firm rights to have businesses ancillary to their practice. The provision was adopted in 1991 to keep large urban firms with many ancillary businesses in line, but opponents argued that it limited rural practitioners who offered other services in addition to legal work. The House of Delegates vote was very close and the issue will probably return.

ABA adopts most discipline proposals; but House of Delegates says cases should be secret until probable cause found
Article Abstract:
The ABA House of Delegates has adopted broad new guidelines for state attorney discipline systems. A proposal to make complaints against lawyers public upon filing failed. Disciplinary bodies are to be under the aegis of state supreme courts rather than bar associations. States are urged to have a central intake office which will route complaints to the appropriate agencies.
