How not to sell free trade
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement reveal that it has failed to live up to its promise of generating thousands of new jobs, improving exports, and spurring economic development. However, the program has not been a total failure since it has made gains in reducing trade and investment barriers and has facilitated regional economic integration. Its supporters made the mistake of promising what what virtually impossible to obtain given the relative size of the Mexican economy, which only has a GDP 4% of the US economy.

Freedom to trade: East Asia ready to remove training wheels
Article Abstract:
East Asia's economic miracle could continue if its governments learn to apply the lessons taught by the Asian economic crisis about free markets. East Asian governments should learn that manipulating exchange rates and protectionism of businesses and financial institutions are what caused the crisis and that the only way the trends can be reversed is by letting liberalization set the pace of economic policy.

Article Abstract:
Proponents of free trade must muster enough courage to push for a unilateral liberalization program. Now that President Clinton's fast track negotiating authority hangs on Congress hands, free trade advocates must direct their attention to dismantle protectionist policies. Reforms have to be instituted on laws about antidumping, agricultural quotas and subsidies, buy American and foreign policy sanctions.
