IP poses opportunities during economic straits; the Asian economic crisis is no time to ignore patents: valuable assets with lengthy lifespans
Article Abstract:
Patents obtained at low prices during the Asian economic crisis will be effective economic weapons for the next 20 years, and both opportunities and pitfalls arise from this crisis for the management and use of patents. Companies should conduct an intellectual property audit and take steps to protect product lines that will be the basis of a recovery. A company unable to protect its products and technologies from the competition will not be able to reap the recovery's benefits. Patents obtained should protect the company's core business and trade secrets, much less expensive, can protect other technologies.

U.K.-U.S. treaty provides weapon against crime: new agreement, awaiting Senate ratification, will greatly increase cooperation in criminal matters
Article Abstract:
The US-UK Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters will give US authorities and even companies a powerful new tool for attacking and redressing crime involving the export of finds to Europe. The treaty, which awaits ratification by the US Senate, will let the US Attorney General and the UK's Secretary of State for the Home Dept petition one another for aid. It applies the same rules to fraud and money laundering, and in some ways expands on the Drug Trafficking Offences Act. It may apply in civil matters.
