Is your law firm losing the war with time?
Article Abstract:
Of the nine time and billing packages evaluated, Impact Software Productions' ProLaw is the most expensive, priced at $9,000. The program's features, such as time and billing, case management, calendar and full accounting, also make it unique. ProLaw is a turnkey law office solution that is separated into Front Office and Back Office, and an optional payroll module is available. Software Technologies' $295 TABS III Jr. is an established DOS time and billing application for law firms. TABS III Jr. tracks data input via the keyboard, and it allows users to merge costs, billable and nonbillable time, photocopiers, payments and credits from outside telephone cost recovery systems, fax machines and photocopiers. Alumni Software's $295 PC Law Jr. features check writing, management reporting, general ledger accounting and trust accounting along with standard time and billing functions. PC Law Jr., however, lacks report writers that permit users to customize invoices and reports.

Catching the clock
Article Abstract:
Timeslips Corp's Timeslips for Windows stands out as the best overall value in this evaluation of five billing invoicing packages for legal professionals. This package can handle 30,000 clients and 250 activity codes, and it performs direct data exchange with over 20 accounting packages. Another standout is Alumni's $295 PC Law Jr, which has time and billing (T&B) features in addition to full accounting functions. This is a smaller version of PC Law and can handle 3,500 clients, compared with PC Law's 10,000. Tussman's $495 Tussman and Century Solutions' $279 TB-2000 are both DOS-based programs that lack sophisticated Windows graphics and functions, but are still quite serviceable. Also reviewed is STI's TABS III, which may be to sophisticated for smaller firms since it has many features beyond standard T&B.
