Judicial vacancies declining: Clinton nominees nonideological, noncontroversial, to the dismay of some liberals
Article Abstract:
Pres Bill Clinton has filled most of the more than 100 vacancies for federal judges which existed at the beginning of his term and selected many female and minority judges. Clinton has, however, been criticized for choosing nonideological judges who will not counter the conservatism of the Reagan-Bush appointees. The nominees' noncontroversial nature, the Democratic majority in the Senate until the Nov 1994 elections and the fact that 63% of nominees received the highest ABA rating probably helped speed confirmation.

Help wanted; Clinton's judicial vacancy headache may get worse
Article Abstract:
Both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Judicial Conference of the US have expressed concern at Pres Bill Clinton's slow progress with appointments to the federal bench. The federal courts have over 100 vacancies, a situation which is only partially mitigated by senior judges helping out. It should be added that Clinton inherited this problem, since vacancies before the 1990 creation of 85 new judgeships to deal with federal court backlogs averaged about half of what they are in 1993.

Judge's impeachment struck down; U.S. Supreme Court decision in another case may settle the issue
Article Abstract:
The District of Columbia Circuit has ruled that former Judge Alcee Hastings' impeachment process was unconstitutional since the Constitution states that an impeachment must be conducted by the full Senate and the US Supreme Court is considering whether the same applies to Walter Nixon Jr. The National Commission on Judicial Discipline and Removal and the ABA Task Force on Judicial Removal are also investigating impeachment procedures.
