Lawyers' role in human rights; working to ensure a just rule of law worldwide is part of our goal

Article Abstract:

Human rights should be the concern of the legal profession because it promotes the values of peace and a just rule of law. The United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights reflected a new commitment to international law as a protector of the individual. It has been called a Bill of Rights for the world, setting forth four fundamental human rights, expanding those contained in the Bill of Rights to include the human needs of the modern era. The development of humanitarian and of war crimes law is also related to human rights.

Labor intensive: courts split on union rights to distribute fliers in malls

Article Abstract:

The US Courts of Appeals for the Sixth and the Eighth Circuits reached opposite conclusions in similar cases involving the rights of unions to pass out handbills on shopping mall property. In O'Neil's Markets v. United Food & Commercial Workers Union, the Eighth Circuit ruled that the supermarket being targeted could not exclude union members from using a public easement. In Cleveland Real Estate Partners v. NLRB, the Sixth Circuit ruled that union speech rights did not trump the property rights of the mall owners.
