Lying mine manager forfeits certificate of competence after explosion cover-up
Article Abstract:
The trial of mine manager Albert Hagerty, accused of safety breaches in a UK mine explosion, resulted in a guilty verdict on June 14, 1996. He was stripped of his certificate of competence, an unprecedented judgment under the Mines and Quarries Act. Hagerty was found guilty of failing to ventilate the mine, preventing smoking, and properly store explosives. He also covered-up the cause of the June 1994 explosion at Graig Merthyr Colliery.

Tackling workplace bullies
Article Abstract:
Bullying behavior by employers and supervisors is an increasing cause of workplace stress in the UK and elsewhere. Bullying can include aggressive verbal behavior and threats, as well as other forms of harassment such as humiliating employees or spreading rumors. Businesses and schools should adopt procedures to prevent bullying behavior, since existing laws do not specifically or adequately address many of these situations.

The UK's Gloucester City Council's anti-bullying policy is an innovative approach to addressing workplace stress and counterproductive behavior.
