Managing partner: the tender trap. Prestige, glamour glory? They say you have to be crazy to accept the job
Article Abstract:
It can be difficult to fill the job of managing partner in law firms, as a number of lawyers worry that their legal skills will grow rusty and their client rosters wane during their tenure on the job. A growing number of lawyers who accept the job are asking for golden parachutes. Many managing partners say they liked the job during the economic good times of the 1980s and that the recession of the late 1980s and 1990s made the job unpleasant, with handling layoffs and salary cuts a larger part of the job.

Mobil counsel ponders cuts; Samuel H. Gillespie III takes over as oil giant faces restructuring, budget trims
Article Abstract:
Samuel H. Gillespie III has become general counsel of Mobil Corp following the departure of J. Edward Fowler. Gillespie's assumption of power comes as the oil company considers downsizing its legal department. Mobil has ordered a restructuring study from the management consultants Booz Allen and Hamilton which is expected to recommend eliminating some of the legal department's branch offices, eliminating jobs and re-evaluating salaries. Mobil will probably decrease its use of outside counsel as well.

Orrick takes New York: the San Francisco firm forges laterals into a one-stop finance juggernaut
Article Abstract:
San Francisco firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe has surged to a leadership position in Manhattan on its ability to identify and serve new practice areas and to recruit top talent in lateral hires. With 338 attorneys in all, its NY office grew from 40 in 1991 to 122 now, one more than the home office. Market definition and diversification were keys to success starting in the late 1980s, with recent growth fueled largely by competitive pricing that held per-partner profits to $420,000 in 1995.
