Managing partners may be led to leap laterally
Article Abstract:
The law profession's recent acceptance of lateral moves by experienced partners is again being challenged by that trend's ultimate expression: hiring of other firms' managing partners. The law-firm culture makes this difficult, as the managing partner has long been expected to have a deep knowledge of the firm's history and traditions. The emergence of strong leaders, rather than simply administrators, has begun at some of the largest firms, and may soon spread to modest-sized ones.

Young rainmakers lead reform
Article Abstract:
The New York law firm Baer, Marks and Upham changed its business culture and marketing effort by focusing on practice groups and having one called the Next Generation for its younger lawyers. This group of young professionals was so enthusiastic that it became larger than any other practice group scheduled to undergo marketing training, then splintered off into smaller units to implement their marketing plans.
