Mr. Thompson takes on Washington: whether as a lawyer, actor or now U.S. senator, Fred Thompson follows his own script
Article Abstract:
US Senator Fred Thompson's various careers often seem to eerily mirror one another. As a lawyer, at 30 he was the Republican counsel for the Senate Watergate Committee; he has appeared in many feature films as an actor, including playing himself helping to bring down Tennessee's governor. Many of his roles have reflected his own views, which now shape national issues. He discusses his thoughts on lawyers' obligations, individual responsibility vs govt action, and the troubling role of money in national politics.

A voice for the people: multiethnic ombudsmen will press cases for everyone
Article Abstract:
Bosnia-Herzegovina's constitutionally mandated ombudsmen for human rights have angered many in the government with their insistence on enforcing the law since their creation a year ago. The three-member panel seeks out abuse without regard to ethnicity, dealing with lesser problems than the atrocities considered by the International Court of Justice at The Hague. The ombudsmen's leading problem is housing disputes, followed by regulations prohibiting freedom of movement and forced citizenship.

At the seat of power
Article Abstract:
Senator Orrin Hatch chairs the US Senate's Judiciary Committee so he is in a position to control the fate of several proposed legal-reform initiatives that respond to a House of Representatives bill. He is pushing his own measure to encourage early settlements, force judges to be more cautious about some scientific evidence, and perhaps cap punitive damage awards. He is concerned that the legal profession has suffered from frivolous litigation and greedy or unscrupulous lawyers.
