No-fault, fee-limit initiatives put on Calif. ballot; trial lawyers blast effort by coalition seeking 'loser pays' rule, reining in of fees
Article Abstract:
A coalition in CA has put three new initiatives on the state's Mar 1996 ballot in an effort to rein in legal fees and lawsuits. The group, called the Alliance to Revitalize California, includes Republicans, Democrats, political and media experts and former Ralph Nader associates. Its measures would require losers in shareholder class actions to pay all legal fees, create a pure no-fault auto insurance system to remove lawyers from insurance disputes, and limit contingency fees on quickly settled cases.

When getting your fee gets tough... sure, the client has finally paid, but what are you going to do with four elephants?
Article Abstract:
Criminal defense attorneys tend to have a hard time getting fees from clients and often accept payment-in-kind. Often lawyers are very necessary but clients have a limited budget. Insurance companies are reluctant to cover legal fees in criminal cases. The government may also want part of the clients' funds as forfeiture of profits from a crime. Judges are reluctant to allow pro se representation simply because of money.

Dupont lawyers battle on fees; expenses are questioned
Article Abstract:
Some of the plaintiffs' attorneys in the Dupont Plaza Hotel fire litigation are alleging that the plaintiffs' steering committee might have filed billing reports and questionable expenses totaling millions of dollars.
