OTS' counsel resigns, reflects
Article Abstract:
Harris Weinstein sat for a final interview on his retirement as chief counsel of the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS). He remembered that one of his main goals when taking the job was to investigate the guilt of attorneys and accountants in the savings and loan fiasco and pronounced himself satisfied with his efforts to meet that goal. The centerpiece of this effort was a $41 million settlement with Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays and Handler, Lincoln Savings' main outside counsel, over their role in the S & L's bankruptcy.

Partner leverage changes; NLJ data shows more law firms reduced associate/partner ratios
Article Abstract:
The 1991 National Law Journal Survey of the 250 largest US firms listed 54 law firms with 1.2 partners per associate. In 1987, when economic times were better, these 54 firms had a ratio of one-to-one. This ratio is called partner leverage. Non-equity partners are a new and growing phenomenon. The recession is, of course, the main reason for the change in partner leverage, but the increase in automated legal research is also a factor. When legal research is automated, it is less expensive for senior attorneys to do.
