OmniPage Pro vs. Textbridge Pro
Article Abstract:
Xerox' $349 TextBridge Pro 96 OCR software scans text more accurately than Caere's $450 OmniPage Pro for Windows 95 7.0, and TextBridge is faster and retains more of the original formatting. OmniPage does have a more appealing interface and a broader range of features, including the ability to schedule unattended jobs. Installing OmniPage can be difficult, but TextBridge installs easily. Neither program can scan pleadings unless the numbered margin is eliminated, but after the margin is excluded, only two TextBridge default settings need to be altered, while Omnipage requires many more adjustments and still is worse at maintaining the original format. OmniPage does perform better than TextBridge when handling a fax with poor text quality. In contrast, TextBridge can recognize three of four fonts tested, while OmniPage handles only one font well. TextBridge's technical support is free, but OmniPage support costs $25 per call after the first two problems.

Article Abstract:
Primavera Systems' $299 SureTrak project management software allows lawyers to take charge of their cases instead of merely reacting to deadlines. SureTrak organizes projects by the time and resources available to them. SureTrak offers its users both spreadsheet and outlining capabilities. Users may enter the general outlines of a project and then edit them as necessary. SureTrak's ease of editing allows users to employ it as a brainstorming tool. To change a project's schedule, users simply drag a timeline to a different point. Task assignments may be changed by dragging and dropping the entry. SureTrak offers Gantt charts that represent a project as a timeline, and users can edit the project itself simply by dragging and dropping on the timeline. Strong reporting features will produce a variety of report formats. SureTrak can be used on a network with no additional charges. E-mail capabilities are included.

Gravity Verdict gives the organizational edge
Article Abstract:
Gravity Inc's $195 Gravity Verdict is a very useful DBMS-equipped legal practice software package. This Windows program enables legal professionals to organize and link all appropriate material for a given case, with the ability to call up specific types of data at will. The first step is to enter a case profile, which contains basic information such as case name, venue, judge and the like. Afterwards, the software accepts routine information such as the service list, witness and expert lists, and parties to the action. The 'Chains of Evidence' feature links all disparate information so that they may be presented logically in court. ASCII documents may be imported into Gravity Verdict, which has an extremely fast search feature. However, documents must be indexed before searching. This program is incompatible with some computers; buyers are advised to check with the company before ordering.
